Data stories come in all shapes and sizes. We create stories through social posts, infographics, articles, videos, and scrollytelling. Each modality has its own strength, and the type of story you're creating likely fits one modality over another.

Each month, we'll publish a story and walk through the full lifecycle of creating the story – from data analysis, predictive modeling, story and narrative creation, to content production. We'll publish data, code, tutorials, and design resources you can use to replicate the story.

Our stories fall within three themes: 1) Sports, 2) Entertainment and 3) Business.

Our current plan includes:

  • May 2025: Predicting Who Will Win the Cup (Socials, Sports)
  • June 2025: The Coachella Effect (Infographic, Entertainment)
  • July 2025: A Spotlight on Reece James (Scrollytelling, Sports)
  • August 2025: AI and the Future of Business (Video, Business)
  • September 2025: Future Trends in AI and Project Management (Articles, Business)
  • September 2025: Welcome to the 2025-2026 NHL Season (Dashboard, Sports)
  • October 2025: The Race to Win the F1 Season (Socials, Sports)

Sports

Our sports stories cover a range of sports and topics. We'll focus broadly on teams and sports on some of our data stories and in others will focus on the specific athlete or event.

May 2025 Story - "Predicting Who Will Win the Cup"

Our first series focused on the 2025 NHL playoffs and demonstrated how you can build a story to predict the winner of the Stanley Cup – including both what to do and the pitfalls to avoid. This data story started with a single, flawed social post and ended with a series of social posts designed to provide updated predictions for the Stanley Cup winner after each game.

Rising through the ranks, he now leads the senior team and has been a vital part of the squad for the last five years. Our end goal with this data story will be to translate the series into a scrollytelling story.

Entertainment

Our entertainment stories seek to uncover interesting facts and trends in the entertainment industry. We'll focus broadly on the industry in some of our data stories and in others we'll focus on specific artists and events.

June 2025 Story - "The Coachella Effect"

Coachella attracts festival goers from around the world. It is increasingly one of the key platforms to help artists reach a global audience and hit new levels of success. According to Chartmetric, the "Coachella Effect" is the impact the festival has on an artist's career. In this data story, we'll explore the Coachella Effect through the lens of four Spotify metrics to see if we can predict the next big breakout artist.
